Course program

This course provides a solid foundation to find and maintain employment as a Business Analyst in the modern business environment. Through a combination of lectures and exercises, students will learn the key techniques and approaches necessary to be effective. They will also be able to understand how the BA fits into the bigger picture of the project, the enterprise, and why it is important to understand the needs of stakeholders, the project, and the business and technical environments. In addition the course covers a number of important subjects critical to excel in the workplace. Students will receive hands-on training in the following subjects:

I. Business Analysis Fundamentals– Students will learn to understanding the business environment; be introduced to the role of business analyst within the project life cycle and become familiar with role of a BA and with the following key parts within business analysis: Requirements, Stakeholder Analysis, Communication, Modeling Business System and Process, Requirements Gathering, Product Development and Delivery, Risk in Projects, PMLC vs. SDLC, Rational Unified Process (RUP), Unified Modeling Language (UML), Business Data Handling and Working with Visio.

II. Project Coordination – In this section students will receive good understanding of some elements of Project Management adjusted to Business Analysis, including Introduction in Project Management, Project Integration Management, Project Scope and Time Management, Project Cost, Quality, HR and Communications Management, Project Risk and Procurement Management. This should give students very clear picture of BA and PM collaboration in the projects.

III. Quality Assurance Fundamentals – This section is designed to impart expertise on manual testing. It teaches the fundamentals of organizing the project and preparing the test plan and will cover Introduction to QA and SDLC, Goals of QA and Documenting Processes; Types of Testing, Web vs. Client/Server testing. After completing this part of the course, students will be able to design the test cases, execute the test scenarios and create test status reports.

IV. Agile Methodology and Scrum – The agile methodology of software development marks a considerable departure from traditional sequential development (“waterfall”). In fact, many aspects of agile are so drastically different from waterfall that it is often helpful for individuals who are new to agile to take a small course to better understand its principles and practices.

V. Understanding Relational Databases and SQL – This part is designed to provide students with the understanding of database concepts and the essentials of the SQL language. Through a series of hands-on activities students will learn data selection and manipulation using multi-vendor compliant SQL syntax.

VI. Data Analysis Fundamentals with SAS – In this section students will receive introduction in Data Analysis including introduction in SAS and Data Processing, Data conversion and Data formatting, SAS/STAT, SAS/SQL, SAS Reports, SAS/ODS and SAS/Graph. Data Analysis is a very valuable additional skill for any Business Analyst and SAS was chosen as a unique, accessible and powerful tool which is widely used in Finance and Pharmatheutical industries.

VII. Introductory UNIX – This section will familiarize students with UNIX environment and provide them with hands- on experience using very powerful and popular in corporate world Operating System (OS). The instructions include customizing user's environment, file manipulation commands and file permissions, introduction to vi-Editor, some basic and intermediate UNIX commands that will help you get your job done quicker and simpler and simple scripting which will show you the power of automation.

VIII. Basic Elements of Financial Analysis – This is an overview of basic concepts and methods employed by financial industry. Students will introduced to fundamentals of Economics, Financial Markets, Financial Products and Instruments, Major processing streams of financial institutions and Wall Street Terminology utilized.

IX. FIX Protocol Fundamentals – The Financial Information eXchange ("FIX") Protocol is the industry-driven messaging standard that is changing the face of the global financial services sector, as firms use the protocol to transact in an electronic, transparent, cost efficient and timely manner. FIX is open and free, but it is not software. Rather, FIX is a specification around which software developers can create commercial or open-source software. As the market's leading trade-communications protocol, FIX is integral to many order management and trading systems.
