Course program

This five-day hands-on workshop will teach you all you need to know to start editing on Avid Media Composer software while exploring the craft of documentary editing. It combines the technical content of Avid MC 101 with the art and aesthetics of documentary editing. In addition to technical training we will devote time each day to effective approaches to structure and storytelling as well as project and organizational techniques specific to documentary editing. Find out how to use avid’s script-sync to help built a rough cut and save hours of search time. Learn techniques to stabilize shaky footage, add movement to static shots and enhance footage by applying basic color correction.

During the week we will be joined by award winning editor Sam Pollard who will discuss his films and career in a rare opportunity to learn the craft from one of the best editors in the field. You will also get an opportunity to screen your work for Sam Pollard in a critique session during the workshop.

We will screen and deconstruct clips from a wide range of non-fiction genres and also cut footage from real documentaries - experiencing first hand how editing can affect character, story and create or alter reality.

Students are welcome to take material from the class to use on their reel.

NOTE: This class will include the Avid certified MC 101 curriculum. You can view that class by clicking here.
